I have had a career in grade 1 pipe bands which spanned over 30 years. Between 1995 and 2005 I was Pipe Major of ScottishPower Pipe Band, one of the worlds leading grade 1 pipe bands. During my tenure we featured in the prize lists of all major championships and won the Cowal and All Ireland Championships.
After a short break from pipe bands I returned in 2008 as Pipe Major of the Spirit of Scotland Pipe Band, which was a unique project which brought together some of the worlds finest solo pipers to form a band which would be together for one week of practice before participating in the world pipe band championships. The story captured the imagination of the public and a movie was made of the bands development and performance at the World Championship where the band made it to the final. In 2016 the band returned for one season with Jim Kilpatrick as leading drummer for his final season. The band (while playing RJM Pipe Band chanters) was placed in 3 of the 5 championships in which it played and obtained a creditable 8th overall place in World Pipe Band Championships Grade 1 Final.
I am now available to provide workshops/ coaching advice to pipe bands covering all aspects of the performance from music selection, practice routines, setting chanters, drone tuning and general advice on how to prepare for and manage the band within the competition arena.
